成語：作舍道旁（ZUO SHE DAO PANG）: one who has no idea of his own—no view point; to build a house beside the way (Literally); no definite view; to build a house by passerby’s opinion; a yes-man.
出處：後漢書，曹褒傳。
釋義：形容毫無主見難以成功的人。
故事：從前有一個沒有主見的人在一個大路旁建一個住宅。房子快要建好的時候，路人甲從那裡經過，對他的房子端詳了好一陣，大發議論說，“若我是房子主人，我就不這樣造。”
那個沒有主見的屋主連忙請教，“依照先生你的意見應該如何造法？”
“你應該把所有門窗的方向都朝東，太陽一出來就射進你的臥房，這樣就可以養成早起的習慣，豈不很好 ! ”
“對，對！你的意見真寶貴，我馬上照辦。”於是，房子被拆掉了。
當房子第二次快要蓋好的時候，路人乙又來發表意見，“住宅最要緊的事是冬暖夏涼，要達此目的，所有的門窗必須改向南才行。現在你住宅的門窗都向東，這怎麼可以呢？”
“對，對 ! 你說的很對。”房子又被拆掉了，接著第三次重建。
後來，出主意的人越來越多，每一個人所出的主意都有道理。因此那個沒主見的房主將其房子建了又拆，拆了又建。三年過去了，房子依然沒有建成。
用法：張三想開一間餐館，思前想後，考慮再三，始終拿不定主意，李四對他說，“你是‘作舍道旁’那會成功呢!”
故事英譯：A guy who was a yes-man built a residence by a road, when he almost finished his house, passerby-A passed by his house and looked at it carefully for a while and then criticized and said,” If I were the owner of the house, I wouldn’t build it like this.” The house owner without one’s own idea asked hurriedly the passerby-A, “According your opinion how should I build it?” “You should change all the doors and windows to face the east,” the passerby-A said, “when the sun rises in the east, the sunlight will shine into your bed room, thus you’ll be able to form a habit to get up early, wouldn’t it be good?”
“You’re right, right. Your suggestion is excellent, I’ll do exactly according your teaching.” Then, the house lord pulled down his house at once. The second time, when his house was nearly completed, passerby-B passed by it and saw the house, presented his opinion to the house-owner and said, ”the most important thing to build a residence is that it should be warm in winter and cool in summer, so in order to get this purpose, the doors and windows of the house should face toward the south. Now, they all face to the east, how can this be done?”
“You’re right, right. What you said is all right.” The house lord was again to tear down it and the yes-man-house-owner would start his third time to reconstruct his residence. Then, the suggestion-offers were more and more, and each of their suggestions was reasonable, so the yes-man’s house was repeated to tear down and reconstruct again and again. Three years passed, the yes-man-house-owner hadn’t finished his residence.
