A Compelling Escape: Muroran, Japan (2)

Wendy Yeh

The city of Muroran works diligently to showcase the city’s many attractions to let visitors experience the charm of Muroran through the promotion of tourism. The convenient public transportation was able to link me to more distant city locales.
I fully understand that to be able to manage limited time and squeeze all of the city’s highlights in is not an easy task to accomplish. But before I started my busy sightseeing journey, I also know that it is essential to protect my feet and wear comfortable shoes.
Muroran is a region well known for whale and dolphin watching. There are several special tours to satisfy visitors’ inquisitiveness and expectations.
The Muroran Harbor Festival is the biggest festival in the city. It is held in a grand style over a period of three days. It includes a fireworks display at night and a floats parade on the main street during the day. Residents and visitors also delight in Japanese dances and songs performed on the streets.
Gin-Byobu is one of the most beautiful scenic spots in the city of Muroran. It is a cliff face located near Cape Chikyu. It got its special name because it resembles a golden paper screen. As I was enjoying the great views, a whisper of wind rustled the cherry trees around me. A group of white seagulls was flying over my head. It gave me a peaceful and pleasant feeling.
It simply would not make sense to visit the beautiful town of Muroran in Japan and forego the quintessential Japanese experience that is the enjoyment of a tea ceremony.
At the tea ceremony, I remembered a quote from English writer Henry James, “There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” We all know that the Japanese traditional tea ceremony is a lot more elaborate and formal than the English afternoon tea. However, the aroma of a cup of freshly brewed tea and the relaxed atmosphere around afternoon tea are just the same.
Embroidery was one of the tasks of women during the long winter months. The women of poor farm families mended and reinforced the fabric of family members’ work clothes by stitching in cotton thread in geometric patterns. Lately, this method of embroidery is used for such items as business card holders, wall hangings, and table cloths.
I strongly believe that all great trips begin with a single step. This important step of careful planning can take me from daydreaming about an appealing place to actually experiencing it.
I wanted my trip to the city of Muroran the least productive days of my life. But it was so packed with interesting activities that time sped without me even realizing it. I am glad that I got to discover the exact answer to my curiosity about Muroran because that was the main purpose of my trip.
