River of January : Rio de Janeiro

The name “Rio de Janeiro” is Portuguese meaning “River of January.” The town was discovered by Portuguese expedition team on January 1, 1502. Rio de Janeiro is the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Part of the city has been designated as a World Heritage Site, named “Rio de Janeiro: Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea”, by UNESCO in 2012 as a Cultural Landscape.
In1763, it became the capital of the state of Brazil, a state of the Portuguese Empire. It subsequently served as the capital of a republican Brazil until 1960 when the capital was transferred to Brasilia.
Sugarloaf Mountain is a distinctive peak situated at the mouth of Guanabara Bay on a peninsula that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. Rising 1,299 feet above the harbor, it is one of several monolithic granite and quartz mountains around Rio de Janeiro. Its name refers to its resemblance to the traditional shape of concentrated refined loaf of sugar.
On that rainy day, I watched rock climbers on Sugarloaf Mountain battling the rough weather. They seemed to have fun doing what they were determined to do.
Mural das Etnias is named Todos Somos Um, meaning “We are all one” in English. This mural is 15 meters high and 170 meters long. It depicts faces of native people existing around the globe. Representatives of native tribes of five continents were used in the design. They are Huli (Oceania), Mursi (Africa), Kayin (Asia), Supi (Europe), and Tapajos (Americas).
I enjoyed admiring the world’s largest street art mural in Rio de Janeiro. Mural das Etnias in Rio de Janerio sets a fantastic world record. The news was made official in 2016 by the Guinness Book.
Brazil’s first two light rail lines opened in Rio de Janeiro in 1082 and Campinas in 1993. The system is among several new public transport developments in the region ahead of the city’s successful bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
“Museu do Amanha” is the Portuguese name for the “Museum of Tomorrow”. It is a science museum in Rio de Janeiro. This museum building sits on 30,000 square meters of land. It was designed by Spanish neofuturistic architect.
The design of the elongated, two-story building allows a view of the Baroque architecture of the Sao Bento Monastery and the A Noite building which is the first skyscraper in South America and headquarters of Radio Nacional.
Rio de Janeiro receives the most visitors per year of any city in South America with 2.82 million international tourists a year. After my trip to the remarkable city of Rio de Janeiro, I totally understood why it got its title of one of the most worth visiting places in the world.
