Paradise Living:Bermuda (2)

Wendy Yeh

When I was doing research on my next vacation, I came across a promotional slogan on Bermuda. It says, “If you wish to lay claim to your own piece of paradise, Bermuda is a destination for those who dream big.” I decided to get a taste of Bermuda’s paradise living.
Bermudians have more than one reason to be proud of their island paradise: perfect weather, sandy beaches, remarkable hospitality, and fine cuisine. But Bermuda was also once a bastion of Royal Naval power in the Western Atlantic, and the grandeur of its architecture reminds me of its rich nautical history.
Bermuda is a British Overseas Dependant Territory with significant autonomy. It is the oldest self-governing overseas territory in the British Commonwealth. Its 1968 constitution provides the island with responsibility for internal self-government, while the British Government retains responsibility for external affairs, defense, and security.
Bermuda shorts – worn by everyone from businessmen to politicians on the island – were originally invented by British military forces stationed on the island in the early 1900s. The stifling heat and humidity of a Bermuda summer compelled the soldiers to cut off their military trousers and the rest was history.
Bermuda shorts are generally made of linen or a very light wool-polyester blend. Tradition dictates that they must stop two inches above the knee and be accompanied by knee-length socks. Often worn with a matching colored blazer and vibrantly patterned tie, the shorts come in a wide array of colors.
Every summer, the Bermuda Fashion Festival comes with expositions, parties, and runways. It draws designers, models, and celebrities from around the world. Local designs are largely inspired by the island culture and the designers’ individual experiences. This year, there are many pink jewelries and accessories that are inspired by Bermuda’s natural beauty.
Boasting Bermuda’s largest museum, a marina, a shopping mall, restaurants, and an authentic British pub, as well as a number of arts related centers, Dockyard is one of Bermuda’s key attractions. It can easily be explored on foot, by train, or even by Segway. No wonder so many people call the Royal Naval Dockyard a jewel in Bermuda’s crown.
As tourism began in the late 19th century, so the number of shops increased. Restaurants, bars, and clubs began to flourish there. But the biggest architectural changes happened as the city became an international business center during the 20th century.
Bermudians have excelled at innovation and creativity.
To me, going to the beach in Bermuda means walking in fresh air, listening to the sound of waves, and feeling the grit of sand beneath my feet. As the golden sunlight skims the magnificent horizon, I understood the true meaning of paradise living in Bermuda.
